What are you playing this week?

I’ve been playing a bit of Solitarica on my Android Tablet

It’s a neat mix of things like Golf Solitaire and Puzzle Quest that’s run based.

What it does well, it does real well but the things it does poorly are straight up bullshit.

If you can’t stand RNG, then stay away. But if you can, it’s a great Solitaire derivative.

I’ve been playing a lot of Civilization VI the past week or so, more than I probably should have. I lost two games in a row trying to get a culture victory before I finally won one.

I also started LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. The last time I played it for more than like 30 minutes was probably when it was released almost 10 years ago. That game owns!

I’ve been playing the new Digimon game, Digimon World Next Order. Is it good? I don’t know! Do I like it a lot? Yes! (Although if you want a good Digimon RPG, play Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, it goes beyond a “good Digimon game” into “a good game”) One weird part of the game is that, no matter how smart or powerful your Digimon might be, they still need to be escorted to the bathroom.

I also just started playing Yakuza 0 last night and holy moly this game is amazing

Been nothing but going through FFXIV as much as I can so I can be vaguely in the general level/game range when the Stormblood expansion comes a 'knockin.

Which means I need to get through both Vanilla AND Heavensward.

… I probably found the MMO which I’ll sink all my non-upcoming game downtime into, haven’t I?

Been playing Wind Waker for the first time. I’m liking it a lot; the sense of atmosphere of being on the ocean and exploring stuff far out on the horizon is just so peaceful, and it fits Zelda’s gameplay wonderfully. Also Link’s design in this game is so gosh darned goofy and adorable, I love it.

I’ve also been digging through some random obscure RPG Maker games in my free time. It’s admittedly kind of a guilty pleasure since a lot of them end up being 2spooky jumpscarey horror games, but I dunno, there’s some pretty cool and unique stuff that people have made with it.

I’m a big fan of ones like Witches House and Ib and Misao!

I remember Ib from quite a while ago; it was a pretty cool little game. Haven’t played either of the other two, though, I’ll have to check them out!

I guess since I’m on the topic of RPG Maker games, I’ve been browsing through some of the fangames for Yume Nikki. I’ve always been fascinated by YN, but I’ve never checked out any of the stuff made by the community until now. Yume 2kki in particular is really damn good so far, like I’m actually starting to enjoy it more than YN in terms of overall world design. Not to mention that it’s so huge; I’ve been playing it for 5 or so hours and I’m still constantly stumbling upon areas and events I’ve never been to before.

I was about to say given your username you’re probably a big fan of yume nikki!

I like Yume 2kki a whole lot! .flow is another great YN fangame, and that and 2kki stand out from the rest of 'em, I think.

As for this week’s game, it’s Dragon Quest 8 3DS. I’m up to Pickham, and Trode keeps saying I’m going too fast. Probably because I can fast-forward through battles now, if I choose to have them at all. And this is with me stopping to grind gold sometimes.

Yangus is still the best and the sweetest, and justifies mashing the party chat button at every opportunity by his presence alone. Best character, best Dragon Quest.

This is gonna be a Nioh week for me, I reckon.

Yeah, this week is Nioh all the way. I wish I could just take a sick day tomorrow and play all day but I have a thing I can’t reschedule, so instead I will be playing all night and probably staying up too late killing yokai with my katana and my cool guardian spirit buddies.

For me it’s been Dragon Quest IX. I got it a few years back, but never really sat down to try to do a full playthrough until recently. I’m really enjoying it so far, and I’m finding myself doing a lot of planning for what I want to do for my characters in the future. Granted, I do that in most games, but because this game has so many different things to do with a party of four, it feels even more satisfying.

Wrapped up Doom last night. Fun game, but the ending itself was kinda eh. Snapmaps are hella fun though.

Also made it to Chapter 13 in FFXV and yeah, I can see why people are ragging on it.

I got a ton of five stars in Fire Emblem so I’ll probably be playing those during downtime at work, aside from that this week will probably be Nioh and Gravity Rush 2 (as well as recording Gravity Rush 1 for the ongoing lp) and might try to get a run or two of RE7 in

oh yeah, and more Dragon Quest 8, gotta get to that new content

Nioh doesn’t come out here until Thursday, and House Of Many Doors was a bit too crashy when I tried it (it got a patch, but now I’m leaving it until I have time to dig in). So currently I’m killing time by lackadaisically playing Elder Scrolls Online (my favourite kind of MMO, where you can ignore all the other players) while watching videos.

Sez Wednesday for Nioh’s release over here, thought it would release on friday.

I’ve been playing Black Mesa (the free mod version), but it kind of started to annoy me after a time. Some of the encounters are rather difficult and clunky to handle even on normal, something I don’t remember from the original. Especially the one where you need to manually fill a rocket launcher and shoot down a troop transporter while simultaneously fending off a whole bunch of sodiers. I dunno, that just felt like busy work to me. Not saying the mod is terrible or anything, but I’m also not really having fun with it at the moment. Maybe I’m just not in the mood for it.

So instead I dug out Mark of the Ninja, which I hadn’t played yet, and gave that a try. I like it a lot, but I’m a sucker for stealth games in general (even though I suck at them). The only issue I have with it is that it’s optimized for a 360 controller, and I’m using an old PS2 gamepad with a USB adapter. That for some reason not only remaps all the buttons to other positions and doesn’t let me change it, it also fucks up the right control stick, so that up is left, down is right, left is down and right is up. Super weird. I got used to it, and to be fair you don’t really need to use the stick that often, but it’s kinda strange that it would do that.

I just started playing Papers, Please yesterday. I thought it sounded boring when it first came out but now that I’ve actually tried it myself, I love it.

Ah, you’re right! One day less to wait, then.
