I totally agree! That choice is probably the worst part of the game because it holds pretty much zero significance because you’re literally choosing whether or not you want the bad end… I’m sad that they made the decision to put such a false choice inside…
Although, even with the very little information we get, I do enjoy and sympathize with Zoe quite a bit, and I really would have liked to give her the cure, but I couldn’t personally justify curing her over Mia…
Here’s to hoping that Zoe gets her own DLC campaign that details exactly all that she’s done prior to this game and what she does during it, because she clearly mentions that you’re not the first person she’s attempted to coach through this nightmare…
We… never really do learn anything about Zoe other than that she was the only one actually able to resist Eveline without outside help(besides Mia?). I haven’t seen the Zoe ending though so idk if we learn more there. And yes I’d have loved more lil notes here and there, especially in the old house.
The Zoe ending is literally nothing. She dies immediately and you go on to play the ship segment as Mia only she doesnt survive afterwards. It’s pretty disapointing
RE6 gunplay is really good. Quickshot into dash-slide then crawl backwards on your back while shooting, rolling out of the way then stunning with a quickshot to do a rear melee to aaahhhhh
It’s so good. So stylish. The Devil May Cry 4 of shooters. The campaign has problems, but by god the mechanics are solid as heck.
I want to try the PC version to see if the higher FPS improves the feel. I know some stuff like the delayed head explosions from melee still persists, which is unfortunate. And putting you up against so many enemies with guns of their own got in the way of the fun, sometimes. But I’ll be damned if doing the silly dive quickshots with the 10-gauge and following with Helena’s ridiculous lucha libre finishers didn’t put a smile on my face.
Honestly RE6 would’ve worked best fleshing out Jake and Sherry’s campaign, with Leon, Helena, Chris and Piers being in-betweener missions.
The only classic style REs I ever managed to finish were the Outbreak games. Those two have a special place in my heart because they were ahead of their time in the worst possible way. Looking back on the initial details they talk about how they were planning things like interconnected scenarios and so many other things that either didn’t appear or just got scaled back severely and you end up with this sort of charming mess of a game filled top to bottom with PS2 online jank. On the other hand OB2 advertised on the back of the box how it was the first RE to allow you to move and shoot at the same time, and that actually owned a lot because it led to everyone grouping up and making a line of slow moving handgun death.
I’ll probably always be a little salty about Outbreak… I enjoyed both titles a hell of a lot, and that was without getting into it in time to experience the online play. I think it’s a real shame we won’t see another title with more polish on more capable hardware.
Oh yeah for certain. Like the idea of a Classic RE that was pick up and play was appealing to me as a kid, it’s just that the execution fell so damn flat. Like the cast of average joes fighting out of the city was neat, it’s just that they were only blobs of unique abilities without any actual character. Same with the idea of melee weapons being the primary weapons, but eventually thirdway through each scenario everyone was toting some kind of gun. And then you have the whole online play on PS2 bit and you just end up looking at the game as a pile of interesting what ifs.
Oddly enough, Capcom did a strange thing in RE7 by having a newspaper that you’re able to pick up be written by Alyssa Ashcroft, the reporter character from Outbreak. That makes her canonically alive in the RE universe I suppose, though who knows about the rest.
I think it’s a good time for them to revisit the Outbreak formula, but they might be very hesitant to do so because of how Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps performed (even if they’re much more generic MP approaches).
I thought they did a wonderful job of making a rewarding cooperative experience with Revelations 2, which also managed to be scary and rather tense. I also think it’s rather tough to do coop with horror, just because having a buddy is such a comfort in almost anything, but I love coop, and would like to see a lot more of it. It’s so much easier to put coop into an action shooter, as we’ve seen with RE5 and upwards, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but being scared with company can be so rewarding and I hope that experience isn’t outright dead.
The most interesting thing about Outbreak was just that your AI partners could just… fuck right off, get themselves killed, bring you things… It was so open to possibility though not always in the best way.
Are there any decent playthroughs of 7 online? Like, without the scarecam and the overacted OH MY GOD A SHADOW I AM SO SCARED bullshit and stuff? I am super interested in it, but have no means of playing it myself.
I’d recommend Cryaotic or TheSw1tcher on YouTube. The first option is definitely more laid-back, and he’s got a voice that’s very pleasant to listen to. The second is a duo, long-time Resident Evil fans as well, more humor throughout the videos in case that’s not your thing.
Both are fairly close in terms of progress, so you can’t go too wrong with your choice, though neither have finished the game yet if you’re not open to waiting.
I fell in love with the crazy cheesiness of Resident Evil with the original, and I’ve played and completed most of the games since then, even RE Survivor. Resident Evil is something I love to play together with my brother, which is why the co-op games have been some of the best for me. Yes, even RE6. Especially RE6, in fact. We just had a blast riffing on the incredibly stupid plot and all the nonsense that was happening. I do realize the game is kinda bad, but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t the most fun I’ve had with a video game in quite a while. Not sure I would’ve even finished that game on my own, but it was so much fun playing together.
I’d still say my favourite game of the series is RE4 (no surprise there), but to my considerable surprise, RE Revelations 2 was pretty good as well. The first Revelations was kinda bland and boring, so it surprised me even more that the second one turned out to be so decent. It’s still pretty cheesy, but the writing is significantly better than in all of the other entries of the series (exlcuding RE7, which I know nothing about and don’t really care about either).
To me, the RE games are not horror games. They’re 50s B-movie horror, the kind where you can see the zipper on the monster costume. That’s what made them fun for me, because I love those kinds of movies, and most of the RE games inadvertantly capture the exact same vibe for me. I think that’s also why it’s so much fun to play them together when having a couple beers, just constantly yelling questions and comments at the screen. There’s the reason why I don’t care about RE7. I don’t want a horror game, I want a B-movie game.
I mean, I don’t like RE6 altogether, but I did have a blast playing it with my younger brother just because it was ridiculous and it was something for us to do together. If it weren’t for that however, I wouldn’t have spent money on it.
I do also agree that the cheesiness is a great aspect of RE, but the series reached a point for a while where the only enjoyable aspect was the gameplay, but the rest was just kind of a mess… It feels like the series is pulling itself out of a hole lately, at least in my opinion.
According to Capcom, all of the Outbreak survivors survived (heh) Raccoon City. Yoko even testified in the court proceedings against Umbrella. Heck, the premier t-Virus vaccine after WilPharma collapsed (see Degeneration) was the Daylight vaccine created in Outbreak, as seen in The Marhawa Desire. :words:
You just reminded me about the CGI movies and now I have a strong desire to watch them all somehow… Also, glad to hear they’re officially confirmed alive, that’s pretty rad.
The dreamer in me really wants to hope that Alyssa being referenced in RE7 is like good news for the people that adored what was essentially a failed experiment of a game, which is delightfully ironic considering the series’ subject matter…
