I swear that 90% of this game’s plot was on that last hour of cassette tapes.

Haven’t had time for the hour of tapes yet, but:

In the first mission I knew that there was some hallucinatory or unreliable narrator stuff going on, but I didn’t guess the actual twist. I thought Ishmael was imaginary, basically - and that everything he was doing was something “Snake” was actually doing himself, somehow.

In my defence, Ishmael’s head model doesn’t look anything like Snake; as Chip shows clearly in the video. Clean-shaven to full beard in an instant is quite the change!

I also didn’t twig that the Man on Fire was Volgin until much later on; probably when it was revealed in the game. In my defence again, I’ve only played MGS games that are available on PC; so no MGS3. I did watch Chip’s LP of it, but still… I’m just not as up on the Metal Gear lore, obviously.

And I did manage to avoid having the big twist spoiled for me, believe it or not - even though I didn’t play the game until a fair while after it came out. I guess being oblivious (read: I don’t really use social media) has its perks sometimes?

I was kinda clued in on the twist when I looked carefully at the eyes. I forget if it was this LP or someone else’s playthrough where the eyes of the avatar were the same. I think. It has been a while.

i’m just super oblivious and i don’t hang out in mgs fandom so i never knew.

I feel like, if you’ve got a head that’s soaked in the Metal Gear Solid brain juice to the point where you can actually understand a lot of it’s more… let’s say esoteric plot points, not just the “what??” but the “why???” part of it, I think the reveal that Venom isn’t Big Boss can be a pretty easy one to divine. I figured it out anyway. But it does require a lot of circumstantial stuff. Like 80% of the evidence can be explained by “big fuck-off spike in he face” after all.

But that being said. The “From the Man Who Sold The World” scene is actually really good. Seeing him kinda shift and fluctuate in the mirror. Hearing the tape talk about how they are Big Boss now… and as we’ve seen with the Paz tapes we have no reason to believe that part of the tape is really from Big Boss himself, which is a fun little mystery in and of itself.

As for the taped explanations; I’m PRETTY sure the after credit teaser conversation in Ground Zeroes was our first look at Skull Face infecting Zero with brain parasites. Like if I recall there was SOMETHING like that that made it sort of clear that the reason why Zero was like what he is in MGS4 is because of Skull Face. I also like how this entire plan was made by Zero just to ensure Big Boss would live, like Kojima is throwing Zero fans a bone and saying he wasn’t ALL evil. Of course, Ocelot and friends co-opted his plan to do what they did and all that fun stuff.

As a final point of notice; Miller saying he will traitor them all the second he gets his hand on a Snake is real good, and Ocelot’s response of “well then I get the other one” is the final culmination of “my parents are fighting!!!” that Miller and Ocelot have going on this entire game and it rules. They each get a Snake in the divorce.

The last update dropping on Death Standing’s release is perfect

And here I thought Chip wanted the LP to have 69 episodes for a cheap meme reference.

There’s still one more episode. Vapor Snake hasn’t had his end.

Nice
