Big Boss is about to go nuclear in METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN (and Ground Zeroes)

man strangelove got done dirty in this game

Jesus fucking christ I had always known Huey was considered The Worst, but now that I know why… good lord. Kinda wish we had the opportunity to fuck canon and kill him.

Poor Strangelove…

Jesus Christ, Vapor Snake…

“Snake, you’ve created a time paradox! But who cares, he had it coming.”

Minutes after Huey departs, a wormhole opens over his boat. A bear drops in. Screams of terror start

But wait

Oh my god

high-fiving?

Chip says it in the episode but hoo boy big content warning for some rapey stuff in this one.

So, I didn’t know about this, but having watched this episode I think I “get it”.

This is what Kojima meant by his dumb words and deeds quote. Due to the game being rushed Quit kinda got fucked up and didn’t get the proper presentation they were shooting for; she was always supposed to be dressed like a regular soldier, for the most part, but the horrible horrible things that happen in this episode is what gets her to her now iconic uniform. That was the intent.

It ended up not working out that way. And of course this is just a theory, no actual evidence, and not actually all that good even when compared to what we got (be ashamed that she breathes through her skin!!!).

I had Big Boss in the Fat Armour at this point, so that snake bite was hilariously unconvincing, since it just looked like the snake trying to bite through a solid metal bracer.

And yeah, this mission facing off against all the tanks with Quiet is definitely the one I found the most difficult in the entire game, by far.

From memory I tried taking the tanks on in the usual stealth way at first; sneak up on them and fulton them - but it wasn’t really workable. Too many of them, too much open ground, and they’re all gunning after Quiet all the while, so…

It was pretty rough, but it did feel good to have a huge, explosive last-stand kind of fight alongside Quiet. It’s a pity the setup for it all was so incredibly contrived.

I hated that mission.

I always hated the parts in metal gear games where they make you go loud really. These games usually teach you to fight smarter, not harder. And it’s especially bad in Phantom Pain where you have to research and upgrade your BOOM to do any worthwhile damage. This mission was a nightmare for me because I only had very basic explosives. It took me many tries until I worked out a strategy to beat this that way. Easily the worst mission in the game. The other worst mission is the one where they force you to fight the Rock Skulls at the airport after you rescue Code Talker. But this dumb tank onslaught takes the cake.

In terms of narrative it’s also a failure because I’m not ashamed of my words and deeds yet.

i can’t add more than what iggy said its pretty much my thoughts

adding on that the part where quiet leaves forever falls flat because you can just replay either of the fights vs her and you immediately get her back as a usable buddy

IIRC it wasn’t like that at launch, that was added in due to all the complaints.

Yup, it was. In the meantime there was a mod to put her back in but using mods is always a bit of a hurdle for people, myself included. I prefer to not have to mod my game most of the time.

Quiet really should learn first aid.

New update with new horrors. There’s a gore warning that I thought I was prepared for but I WAS WRONG.

Every time Ocelot pops up I remember he’s in this game, and pretty much completely wasted as a character.

I can’t remember so well, but when the Paz stuff was introduced, weren’t Miller and Ocelot also there?

Yes, but those were inside the room before you got there. Anything inside the room is a hallucination.

I think I said early in the thread that the Paz storyline is so easy to miss that I had no idea it was in the game until I was nearly finished. Even then I only realised it was there because it was covered in an LP I watched a bit of at the time.

That meant that I didn’t get to the end of the Paz story until after getting the final(?) “ending” of the game, which casts this part in kind of a different light.

Still can’t really talk about that yet obviously, but it did make this part even more poignant. In the LP this was the end of Big Boss’ story, and it was also exactly where I stopped playing the game. Pretty sad ending, really.
