You ask "Y?" I ask, "Y-Naught?" We Are Not the Same. Let's Play Super Robot Wars Y

What game is this?
This is Super Robot Way Y. It’s the latest game in the Super Robot Wars Franchise that has been running since 1991. You can expect a giant crossover game featuring a story combining a bunch of your favorite (or hated, or completely obscure) mecha anime.

Don’t you have a SRW 2 LP that you’ve abandoned?
Yes, but I don’t have time to continue that right now. Between translating, playing through three versions of the same stage, and editing it all together, it takes over 20 hours to put out a single episode.

What series are in this game?
Reideen the Brave
Super Electromagnetic Robo Combattler V
Aura Battler Dunbine
Aura Battler Dunbine: Tales of Neo Byston Well
Heavy Metal L-Gaim

What’s the format and release frequency?
This will be a video LP as all of my LPs are. I’m putting out releases daily assuming nothing goes awry. I’m also releasing this in sync with my friend Ace_Zappa. I’ve taken the Male protagonist (Cross), and will generally grab Real Robot routes when given a choice. Zappa is doing the opposite and has taken the female protagonist (Forte), and will generally grab Real Robot Routes.

Ideally, between the two of us, we’ll show off the vast majority of the content, as can be done with two routes.

Playlist of my videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcqB3nQao9nC2a-6GJkzYWepzszCl5lQd
Playlist of Zappa’s videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBIcTzFfqJawVUt_YujOORGRKyy5w-HR4

To clarify, Zappa isn’t on this forum, and I will not be posting his videos aside from the playlist above. However, I will reference his LP at times in mine, and we sometimes crash each other’s streams, so there may be surprise guest appearances. Furthermore, because we are doing our best to show off mutually exclusive content, you will occasionally need to pop into his LP to see what the other option of something was.

Spoiler Policy: This game is about a week old. Absolutely no spoilers! However, you absolutely are allowed to mention things to watch out for that create missable content. For example: “Side Mission 2-1 gets replaced by a mutually exclusive mission if you hold off on playing it until after you beat Side Mission 2-7” is a perfectly acceptable comment to drop. It helps ensure my route planning is optimal, and that Zappa and I can prepare ahead of time to show off different stages.

On the other hand, “Mu La Flaga dies if you deploy him on stage 40” is absolutely unacceptable. Likewise, just general plot spoilers and interesting crossover moments that haven’t happened yet are not acceptable.

Four episodes to start us off:

Episode 1: Flowers, a Ninja, a Birthday

We start the game off with our new main characters, Cross Tsukinowa, pilot of the Lunedrache, and Echika Y Franburnett the girl who received control of a city-sized air/space ship on her fourteenth birthday from her late father. And it’s on her very birthday that our story and the action begins.

Episode 2: The Demon on High Awakens

We’ve gotten the OG plot fired off, and now it’s time to take our first pick. Our choice is between Getter and Dynazenon at first, so we decide to go with Getter first. Zappa will take the opposite route and grab Dynazenon first.

Episode 3: Combine Dragon

The Getter team has joined, and now our only choice to move forward is to take on the Dynazenon plot. Kaijus have arrived and threaten the city. Not the godzilla kind, but they do have a resemblance.

Episode 4: The Door Opens

Now that we’ve gotten both Getter Arc and Dynazenon, we return to the united route and play the final stage of Chapter 1. Domon and Rain sneak aboard the A. Advent, but are immediately discovered. They join us for now and help us defend Tokyo.

Episode 5: A Mission for Brave Heroes

Let’s Fire up Chapter 2 by heading out to meet the Reideen team. Yes, I’m pissed that it’s called Reideen when it’s actually Raideen. Reideen is the remake, Raideen is the original. But nope, we’re now calling the original Reideen. Oh well. The Reideen team is recovering from one of their members dying in battle. Fortunately, they have Tetsuya and Great Mazinger with them to help. We’re only there to give them energy, but we end up getting pulled into the fight as well.

Episode 6: Visitors from Another World

Now that we’ve fully entered chapter 2, the world has opened wide for us. We have the next main stage to progress the story. We have five side missions to collect allies and get more plot and character development. We have two DLC/Preorder bonus stage. We have a front/battle mission, and we have a lot of talking

We’ll be starting up with one of the preoder DLC stages. Dimensional shenanigans happen, and the protagonists of SRW V, Chitose and Souji, appear on our Earth to their great surprise. On top of that, Masaki also arrives in his Cybaster from another world. Yes, it’s Cybaster, not Cybuster like it should be. I don’t know, I guess it’s a good turkey baster.

Episode 7: Unstable Dimensions
We have another DLC/preorder stage. This is the reward for getting the DLC 01/02 pack. The SRW X and T protagonists show up with the Xelguard, Tyranado, and Tyranado Rex. Once more, it’s dimensional shenanigans bringing these characters over to our Earth.

Episode 8: Malice in Their Shadows

Alright, enough time spent on collecting DLC units, let’s move onto the the actual game once more. We head over to Stockholm to meet up with Relena. We’re promised Wing, but instead we get Some Gundam ladies, plus Kallen hanging out and getting attacked by androids. Relena is the current Vice Foreign Minister, Lacus is fulfilling her post-Destiny role, and Kallen and Allenby are Relena’s bodyguards. We didn’t get a lot of Gundam Wing happening, but that’s OK. The stage specifically mentions Gundam SEED Destiny, so that’s the next stage we’re going to take. When Zappa gets around to this stage, I’ve asked him to play it after playing the Destiny stage first to see how it changes.

Episode 9: Behind Those Rage-Filled Eyes

The previous mission told us to head to Orb, and we dutifully oblige. There we meet up with Cagalli, Athrun, and Shinn. As always, we went as mere energy merchants, but soon we were roped into battle. We also learn a little more about the revolutionary war that happened before, and what some of the old rivalries were. Shinn and Kallen apparently we fierce rivals, and only had the chance to meet in person now.

Episode 10: Relic Hunt 1 and 2: Gales and Lightning

OK, that was enough story and recruiting allies for now. When in doubt, collect side-content.That’s my motto. That’s how we show everything off. This time, we do two relic stages. These are short stages, limited to three units, where you need to solve a puzzle whether that be in terms of placement, movement, or prioritization. The stages are pretty simple for now. I’m sure they’ll get harder later.

Episode 10: Relic Hunt 3: Sight and South American Front

Zappa did all three relic hunts as a single mission. I split off the third one and added it to the front mission. This one was super easy to solve, and then the front mission is just for grinding kills for ace bonuses and secrets.

Episode 12: A New Gundam Fight!

We’re done with the filler mission, and we’re done with the “Real Robot” side of the start of chapter 2. While G Gundam straddles the line between real and super, we treated it as Super and Zappa had a crack at this stage before me.

We’re invited to New York, where Chibodee challenges Domon to a Gundam Fight. But after losing, VAL-X attack and we need to fight off a horde of enemy units. Chibodee in the Gundam Maxter and George in the Gundam Rose end up joining us to figure out what’s going on.

Episode 13: The Campbellian Enigma

We head down to Easter Island where Hyoma and the Combattler V team are protecting scientists exploring the Campbellian ruins, when suddenly they fall under attack. To make things worse, Garuda reappears, but it seems to not be the original Garuda, but a new one with none of his memories.

Then, the Insectors appear and turn this entire engagement into one giant mess.

Episode 14: Aliens Adrift

Alright, that’s enough of the side stages. It’s time to grab the next main stage and progress the story and and expand the mission chart. We head to Panama to gain permission to go to space. We get it, although there are multiple units dimension shifting into our location. Daba and Show appear, although with the wrong fairies at first. Their respective enemies have teamed up and are fighting us, dragging the A. Advent into the conflict.

Episode 15: Majestic Prince, Sortie

Since we gained access to space, we now have access to a greater array of missions. Obviously we can progress the story, but there’s so many other side missions to grab. First and foremost, since I’m on the real route, I need to first grab the real representatives from this area, and that’s none other than the Majestic Prince, or perhaps the Fail Five. Based off of today’s performance, we’re going to be hurting trying to use them as main units. Oh well.

Episode 16: Relic Hunt: Courage, Sacrifice, Aura

Today we have three Relic stages. Just like last time, these are puzzle stages that have you dealing with an enemy force with a limited turn count, and under special conditions in order to receive some parts.

Tomorrow’s episode is in copyright hell. It’s disputed, but if it doesn’t get released by tomorrow, I’ll just link an alternate video host instead.

Episode 17: To Be A Hero

This is an alternate version of Side Mission 2-1. If you play the base version, it is a Dynazenon stage. You can see the base version of this stage as episode 11 of Zappa’s LP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah_FfYd_vlo

However, now that we have recruited the MJP team, the base version of this stage is unavailable, and our alternate version has the MJP and Dynazenon teams training together as they build up Gauma’s one-sided rivalry.

Copyright block removed! Episode is live

Episode 18: The Bell of Londenion

Time for another route split with exclusive content. We’re starting up Char’s Counterattack plot, although we’re in a weird, semi-post-plot version of Char’s counterattack. We can start up by meeting up with Neo Zeon or with Londo Bell. We decide to meet up with Londo Bell, because that gives us Amuro sooner. Meanwhile, Zappa has taken the Neo Zeon route first. Check his version here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtti8tAvi3o

Episode 19: Char And Amuro

We move onto the second part of this two-parter. Londo Bell enters Side 3 and meets up with Char. Along the way, we are intercepted by Wulgaru and Posaydal forces. They seems content to fight us and not each other. Fortunately, Neo Zeon comes to our aid, including Gyunei, Quess, and Kamille in the Hyaku Shiki Kai

Big Catchup dump. I was volunteering at a festival this weekend. I worked 45 hours between 5am Friday and Sunday night. Plus I also did another 4-5 hours of cleanup on Monday. It took a lot out of me, but I’m recovering well. Should be back up to normal soonish. A good night of sleep and few days of rest should be enough to get me back up to speed, but that good night of sleep, and days of rest are proving to be elusive. Anyway, enough complaining about hard work, let’s talk about some super robots.

Episode 20: The Despondence of the Sixth

With the start of the CCA plot happening, it’s time for us to move on. In fact, we’re backtracking for some more Majestic Prince plot. We the debut of Team Doberman and Ange Kuroki in the Black 6. Ange has some massive mood swings, ranging from soft and demure to absolutely unhinged!

As this is a secret, only I’m getting it. Zappa is doing the Aura Ladies stage this episode instead, where he will get a Dunbine unit early. By doing this, we’ll each show off what happens when secrets that could join early don’t.

Episode 21: Crimson Vortex

Warning: I ended up replaying this stage. If you’re following along with my route, make sure that Amuro and Kamille have a total of 76 kills or more by the end of this stage.

We’re out of secret stages and side stages that I have priority on getting. That means it’s time to go back and grab the “Super Robot” side stages. The relevant section here is the debut stage of Jet Jaguar from Godzilla Singular Point. And let me just say, Jet Jaguar is the best support bot ever! He needs to get all of the support attacks!

Episode 22: Beyond Time, Beyond Space

We’re called back to Londenion because apparently we didn’t provide all the energy that we got paid for. However, this is all a ruse, as secretly, the Nu and Zeta Gundams have been found, and have been transferred to us by Cameron from a mysterious benefactor.

Episode 23: A Witch, A Bride, An Angel

We’re out of any other possible stage to play, so we’re forced to move forward to the next story stage. This time, it’s the debut of The Witch from Mercury. We get thrown straight into the first episode of WFM, although Heero, Duo, and Hilde are helping the preventers by sneaking into the school.

And with that, we’re caught up. Sort of. I still don’t have tomorrow’s episode recorded, so I’ll be doing that tonight. It’ll be on stream if I have time, or just recorded if I don’t.

I just forgot to post the update yesterday, so have a double update

Episode 24: Cursed Mobile Suits

This stage is mandatory to do immediately after the previous one. Essentially it’s a two-parter.

We have another duel with Guel, and I show off both what happens if you win, or if you delay. We keep the winning option, just in case. I’m not sure if I’ll take the Bob secret, or if Zappa will take it, or if we’ll both take it.

After that, we’re attacked by Wulgaru, including Izuru’s rival, the second prince.

Episode 25: Justice and Friendship

We have an optional side mission that appears just now, and will disappear once we grab the next story stage. It causes Quatre and Sandrock to join early, and gives us a bit of story about Wufei and his “team”.

This is another stage that Zappa will not be playing. So if you’re following along with his playthrough, welcome.

Nothing quite like being on-call on a weekend to mess up your release schedule. Yay!

Episode 26: Returned from the Abyss

I could go grab the Destiny stage, but I’m going to hold off on it so I can catch up with Zappa. Surprisingly, we’re doing the same stage today. However, because we’re out of sync, I’m doing this stage as the first of the two-parter, and Zappa is doing this as the second stage of the two-parter.

We head to Zilkhstan because Relena, Lacus, and Nunnaly were kidnapped. Along the way we run into CC and resurrected Lelouch. A prison break and gauntlet of enemies later, we rescue everyone except Nunnaly, who we were unable to find.

Episode 27: The Singer from the Galaxy

Let’s fire up the Macross Delta plot! We get some weird humanitarian supplies from across the galaxy, and the then suddenly berzerkers! However, berzerkers cannot stand up to the power of diagetic music sung by idols!

Episode 28: Who Determines Destiny

Finally stages that don’t last forever! It’s the Gundam SEED Destiny early upgrade stage. We head out to PLANT but along the way, we run into the Wulgaru attacking. We of course step in to the action. I was reckless in my defense, spreading out and leaving lots of holes. When VAL-X arrived to blow up the colony, Luna arrived with the restored Destiny Gundam, and delivers it to Shinn. We now have Shinn in his correct mobile suit. And he even does the start of the School of the Undefeated of the East dance at the end. The cowards didn’t show it in full though!
