I like the meaning of Gestalt in both German and Psychology (It was either Gestalt or Prägnanz). I added the 'i" when Gestalt was taken and I like how it looked. iGestalt. I’m a weird apple product.
It comes from a Life in Hell comic where Matt Groening is reading a pop-up dinosaur book to his very young son Abe, and on every page turn his son insistently asks “Wuzzat?” to each new dinosaur that comes up despite every one having either it’s head or wings torn off from a previous read.
It popped into my head and made me chuckle while I was signing up for something, but I didn’t have the strip in front of me so I just winged the spelling.
SuperGraffiti is a shortening of the name of my old bad webcomic Superhero Manga Graffiti. And THAT name came from a rejection letter I got from the university I wanted to go to to study Illustration. The letter said that I should build up a portfolio that didn’t include superheroes, manga or graffiti art because the course leaders weren’t interested in seeing that sort of thing. I was very confused because the portfolio I showed them literally did not contain any of those things.
My initial username was “cyberrat101”. Because my brother got hyped on the movie Hackers, he had his hacker name be “cyber rat”. When he dropped it, I took it up and added a 101 at the end of it. I used this through elementary and high school for most things.
Then when I started playing Champions Online, I saw that there was a bear head costume piece and thought it looked pretty cool. I started playing BlazBlue Calamity Trigger at the time and my friends and I joked a lot about the Tager tutorial video, where MikeZ coined the phrase “Real Soviet Damage”. So I mixed the two together and created a character called “Real Soviet Damage” who was a bear who was also a wrestler. I thought the character was funny, so I looked into joining a RP guild just so I would have an excuse to type in broken English and imitate what the rest of the World thought were Russian accents. When the guild required an application with my backstory, I didn’t know what to write, so I invented this entire plot of a planet of Communist Bears that evolved into an advanced race, but were then invaded by the planet of Capitalist Dogs who didn’t want to lose the vodka market to the bears.
Since I stuck around in Champions Online for a long time, eventually I had a circle of friends who kept calling me “Bear”, so I ended up dropping my username and just went with “Real Soviet Bear”.
Recently there was the “Soviet Bear” meme that came up, but my handle was like in 2010 so I’ve had it for 7 years now (jesus), so I predate it. (Although it is a good meme.)
Once upon a time on a forum long forgotten my username was “InsaneGenius”.
Of course, that name was a lie, I am neither insane nor a genius. Well, maybe slightly insane.
I spent several years there getting acquainted with the people and they with me. Most called me IG but after we got our own chatroom some people called me Iggy. When I later signed up to a now dead LP Forum that wasn’t SA I went with IGgy, to honor the roots that are IG, but at the same time I finally got rid of the name InsaneGenius.
Sometimes when the name Iggy is already taken I add the fake last name “IGsen”.
That is my story.
Mine is a combination of the abbreviation of my real name (which basically everyone uses to call me, even my boss), and an in joke from a forum I still occasionally frequent. Since the content creator that forum is connected to has basically dropped off the map, the forum has been slowly depopulating for the last two years, so I only check it out like once a week these days. Can’t even remember what that joke was anymore, but I just stuck with it when I came here. El Cid was aparently some spanish national hero, never bothered to look up what the guy actually did.
I’ve gone through a ton of names, a lot of them vaguely fantasy-esque. I was Arcadia for a few years after dropping the handle (and attitude/lifestyle) I used for MMO griefing thanks to MSPA, which despite introducing me to some awful people in the little subcommunity I took part in, also gave me some of the best friends I’ve had in years.
I decided I wanted something a little different with the onset of transition so I adopted Sunny Satellites as my name but it wound up being too long for a lot of services so it got contracted to SuSat. Also I just learned today that apparently a SUSAT is a military scope for rifles.
I like fungus and dogs.
Mine is some clever (Read: not) wordplay based on the SMT series. See, there’s a demon called a Jack frost, his catchphrase is “Hee-ho!” in the Raidou kuzunoha series, there is a jack frost that looks slightly like the main character. This jack’s name is Raiho. A pun.
Well, My favorite SMT character at the time was the P3 MC, and the only canonical name he had at the time was “Minato” from a manga. So I thought “What if he had a jack frost” and heenato was what I came up with. And I still haven’t hated the name enough to try and get rid of it, so here we are.
Back in college I used to read a lot of drama communities on livejournal and journalfen (y’know, like fandom wank and stupid free and their offshoots) and my username came from two of my favorite dramas, namely one where someone lost their shit over the word sammich and another where a girl said purple wasn’t a real color and refused to use the word in her shitty fanfiction. No links because this shit is too old to find and journalfen is dead lmao
I have always wondered about the relationship between you and the youtube channel, if there was any, so to discover that you were actually the inspiration for it is really cool.
Oh uh, guess what my real name is.
…It’s not Knight! Knight is because I am a stupid fanboy for Wild Arms and when I was twelve, I thought Knight Blazer in Wild Arms 2 was the coolest thing in the universe, and so for the longest time on GameFAQs I was Knightblazer1988. Then I thought in a fit of paranoia wait, do I really want to advertise how old I am over the entire internet? (I also discovered that 88 is apparently slang in certain terrible circles for HH…as in, Heil you-know-who. ) So it became Wild Knightblazer in a bunch of places where usernames need to be long and Wild Knight where it didn’t, because Knightblazer came from Wild Arms.
Then I decided it’s kind of sad to be paying tribute to a series that hasn’t had a new entry in over ten years so I turned Wild into my real name and whoop whoop.
King Kool is the final boss of Megarace. He is the leader of the Master Class, the rich, snooty racing team from Fractalian Space. Megarace is the first game I ever beat for PC, possibly ever.
I’ve never really changed my username. Prior to that, I might have used Kastore, a elvish warlock from Heroes of Might and Magic. His gray-blue skin made me think he was some sort of ice wizard. Evidently, there’s been a ‘cool’ theme running though my entire life.
It has nothing whatever to do with Donkey Kong Country and King K. Rool.
After playing the MM8 Doom mod with some other SA goons, and appropriately choosing to play with the Iceman skin, I incorporated the Iceman with the recolored parka in my avatar on Twitter and most other places.
King Kool is not a very cool name, ironically. But I am attached to it now.
Thyme is the name of my first (and main) Guild Wars 2 character. He’s a sylvari Mesmer, and since sylvari are plant people and Mesmers have time magic, I figured “Thyme” would be a pretty clever name for him. Because character names are game-wide and not server-specific in GW2, I was really lucky to get it–I ended up grabbing the name in the first two minutes the servers were up during the head start that preorderers got.
But I also had already been naming characters Thyme before then. I don’t remember what game was the first one I did this in, but when I had to name four characters for my party, I ended up calling them Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme because, y’know, folk song reference. I liked that as a naming scheme so I’ve been doing it ever since.
On SA, my username is Harrow and I really don’t remember why I picked that. I think I had just read China Mieville’s Kraken, where the protagonist’s name is Billy Harrow, and just thought it sounded neat? I always liked “Thyme” better as a username but, as you might imagine, it’s taken most places, so I took advantage of this being a new forum and grabbed it while I could.
I was playing Diablo II in middle school and thought Brobarian would be an absolutely hysterical name for a barbarian, and it was. But then he died. So then I made a necromancer and felt that I had to stick with the “bro” theme, so I went with Skelebro, which stuck. Years later, the word “bro” kind of annoys me now so I just truncate it whenever I can.
An alias I used before that was Marx. You know… the Kirby character! I remember getting pulled into a lot of conversations that went way over my head back then.
I like birds and I have a tendency to ramble a little. Plus I wanted a play on whirlybird, so it worked out pretty nicely. That’s basically all there is to it.
I came up with the name when I was around 13 years old (christ, that’s over a decade ago). I started a new file for Wind Waker and needed a name for it. Being a clever 13 year old, I took the noun wind and affixed -er at the end; it was clever because it was like a real word but not really. I though that was really cool back then. Well, I later found out about the verb wind but didn’t bother changing my name anymore. I thought the meaning was still cool, I think. Also means that originally, at least, the i in my name should be pronounced like in the noun, but I don’t care either way tbh.
Well, I’m not the only kid who thought Winder was a cool name, and it’s taken on most sites. I used to put numbers in my name to make a new name because that was cool, but nowadays I like putting more -er at the end of the name to get what I want. Because it’s funnier. So far Winderer is usually enough to get a name lol.
Eons ago, I used to go by Electron. Then I realized it was unoriginal and sucky, so I cut out the first half and changed a vowel. Hence, Tren. It doesn’t mean anything.
I later added Wolfman because of furries or whatever.
(And people still think I’m a Geographer or Geologist.)
I named myself after a character in a World of Warcraft machinima series that I liked.
I used to call myself “Thnikkafan”, after the Thnikkaman of Homestar Runner fame, but then I realized once I started playing in environments with voice chat that people can’t actually pronounce that one.
