Week 4
Week 4 was a story of injuries, of close, heartbreaking matches, and a small separation amongst the managerial teams.
We start with my Game of the Week, and for 3 quarters, it looked like it wouldn’t live up to the hype.
Game 1: Fort Merceus @ Albinea
We begin in Albinea for a manager v manager showdown. Albinea got some new looks, including their top scorer:
Say hi to Rimmy Tim
But it was Fort Merceus that started off quickly
They pulled out a 27-9 lead early in the 2nd quarter, and managed a 37-24 lead at the half. Albinea struggled against the Fort Merceus defense early, not getting a lot of clean looks inside.
In reality, the Seahawks only had a few clean looks late in the half to keep it within 15.
The comeback came furiously in the 3rd quarter:
The 3 that got Albinea within 3
The shot to get within 1
Unfortunately, the comeback stalled here, as Albinea could never quite snatch the lead away. They would get to 73-72, before Fort Merceus put the game away with free throws, 79-72. Still, the game ended up being as good as I anticipated.
Game 2: Hoshido @ Leicester
Oh hey, it’s our old friends Hoshido again! Good to see you after your huge win over Nohr! How have things been going since then?
Oh… you lost to Valm and Ailell, huh? Rough times, but you guys tend to show up in primetime, and boy oh boy:
Leicester is fucked up. Seriously, I have no clue how Leicester has managed an undefeated record so far with these significant injuries. And Leonie has apparently been injured since the season began!
And like clockwork, a member of Hoshido started the game off red hot.
You might think that’s a whole game of highlights, but Takumi hit 5 3 pointers in the first 4 minutes of the game. He also had 12 more points in the first quarter, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. Hoshido scored 34 points in the first and Leicester looked shell-shocked, and could barely manage 11 points.
Then our favorite coach, Mr. Fizdale, took Takumi out.
For the 2nd and 3rd quarter.
IN A GAME WHERE HE COULDN’T MISS
HEY FIZ, WHAT THE FUCK
This incredible mismanagement not only allowed Leicester to come back, it allowed them to come back while looking like absolute trash.
Hilda and Claude combined for 60 points in the last 3 quarters, and the Hoshido offense fell apart at the seams.
They scored a combined 54 points in the last 3 quarters, and Leicester cruised to a 98-88 victory.
What was that.
Game 3: Rhea vs Fhirdiad
Garreg Mach @ Fhirdiad had a lot of promise, but Dimitri was held out of the game for his broken nose, and Annette had bruised her toe, and was being held out for safety reasons.
While fair, this was a big rematch of the finals from the test league, so Fhirdiad being down 2 major players was a little disheartening.
The game started with some Shamir/Catherine shenanigans.
And Shamir continued to be a nuisance when Catherine was off the court.
But the real story of the game was Rhea.
Rhea played without fear, with a thirst for vengeance not seen before.
22 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks
But, not all was lost. Sylvain and Ingrid tried to save the game for Fhirdiad.
Even Dedue did his best
….
Haha Shamir Nevrand go brrrrrrr
Garreg Mach killed poor Fhirdiad, 119-92. It really makes that loss to Nohr look even stranger.
Game 4: Almyra @ Nuvelle
If there is a team more snakebitten than Almyra, I’d be surprised. They opened the week with a big win in the Spectre Center against Valla, quite possibly their strongest showing. And it looked like they might pull out a shocker in Valentia. I like to sim some of the more interesting potential games through a mode that shows the scores updating in real time, and this is what happened with Almyra @ Valentia. (Didn’t even get a screenie, I was so shocked).
Celica 10 foot shot. Valentia scores, leads 90-91, 10.2 seconds left.
*Al-Dawla tip in. Almyra scores, leads 92-91, 1.4 seconds left. *
Python 45 foot 3 pointer. Valentia wins, 92-94.
Rough loss.
And it seemed to affect the team going into the first half, as Almyra let Nuvelle get a quick lead.
A fast 20-11 lead for Nuvelle seemed to end the game early. Almyra sleepwalked through the second quarter, but managed to at least score some points.
Still, 36-29 at the half is not what you want from your defensive team when scoring is a rare commodity.
But like the last few games, the second half got more physical. Nuvelle seemed to take on the challenge early:
But shots began to miss, and Almyra began to score.
The score was 47-46 at the end of the 3rd, and Almyra looked like they were in charge.
In fact, with 5.5 seconds left, they took their first and only lead, 66-68, on a Muizz Ad-Din 3 pointer. But this is Almyra, who is starting to look like the playoff Saints of the last 3 years.
Or the Super Bowl Bills in the 90s.
Or the 90s Knicks.
Nuvelle wins, 69-68.
