Gore, War, and a bit of Lore - Let's Play For Honor

For Honor

For Honor is an Ubisoft Montreal game released in February of 2017. The game was first seen back in 2015 but after a good wait it finally came out to positive reviews but soon after release a slump followed.

The game focuses on a multi-faction war in a seemingly fictional version of our own world. This war will contain Samurai, Knights, and Vikings. That is the entire premise of the game, see awesome historical warriors duking it out. It’s what a Deadliest Warrior game really should be but wasn’t. Constantly at war with one another after a terrible calamity the samurai, knights, and you guessed it vikings, all fight over territory and resources. This is seen both in campaign and in the very competitive online multiplayer for the game. The game features four classes for each faction reaching a total of 12 with 2 new classes added each major update. Currently there are 4 added classes, additional classes cost a lot of in game currency or real money to unlock while base game classes are cheap. In For Honor you are able to fully customize your characters for each class choosing their gender(Though some classes are gender specific), skin color, armor color, designs, and even some of the fashion with choices related to loot you unlock as you play the game. It is microtransaction heavy but if you play the game a lot this can be totally avoided.

The LP

Hi I’m Tolvo I’ll be the one recording, commenting over, and uploading for this LP. We will start off with an introduction to the game and then the majoriity of it will be spent on the story with additional updates for every class in the game that I can reasonably show off as well as every mode, training video(Basic and Advanced), and mutiplayer to give an impression of what the PvP is like. I plan on uploading two versions of each main video past the introduction, one with commentary and one without(For those who don’t like my voice, just want the game only, etc). I will be putting content warnings on each episode. Mainly this game is very gory and bloody. This is not a 100% playthrough nor is it a hard or realism playthrough. I want to show off the game not particularly my own skill.

1.1 Warlords and Cowards

Hervis Daubeny is a knight who has recently abandoned the Blackstone Legion, a powerful force in the land of Ashfeld that is a rising power overturning much of the old ways. The player starts as the Warden, our main character for the Knight campaign. Wardens are some form of protector that take oaths ni ancient orders which are now lost to time. We will be defending a small fort against the Blackstone Legion who are here for Hervis. This will be our first run in with Holden Cross, a Blackstone Lawbringer. Going from a lowly knight defending a Coward we just might end up a champion serving a true Warlord.

1.2 And Stay Out

The Iron Legion is under siege by the nefarious Vikings. We are first introduced to these raiding warriors in this battle. Stone is a Conqueror and a commander of the Iron Legion who is in dire need of reinforcements. The Blackstone Legion has promised aid, and Holden Cross has sent a single warrior, the Warden. Our Warden charges out of the gate into the fierce fight and turns the tides for the Iron Legion. Before long the Warden has shown the supreme skill of those of the Blackstone to Stone who begrudgingly decides to join up with the Blackstone.

1.3 The Blackstone Legion

We find ourselves out in the fields and ruins of Ashfeld. Holden Cross has tasked the Warden and Stone with dispatching the remaining Viking forces as well as deserters of the iron Legon. The Vikings have a small fort while the deserters lay within a ruined old church. We battle our way through and end up outnumbered, but thankfully the leader of the Blackstone Legion arrives, Apollyon. With tenacity and a series of blocks, pirouettes, and slashes she defeats and subdues the would be attackers. We get to see a glimpse of who Apollyon is with how she deals with the captives. To her there are Wolves and there are Sheep. She will not suffer the presence of sheep. The Warden comes to realize that perhaps what they are doing is in the wrong and begins to question their role within the Blackstone Legion.

I just started watching with my husband and if there is not more puppy sounds in the other videos I shall be very sad…but will understand.

There likely will be lol, they like to bark a lot and it is pretty hard to find times to record where they’re not while watching them.

Valkenheim in Winter

Welcome to the Viking lands, these frostbitten mountains, fjords, valleys, and coasts are home to the mighty people known simply as Vikings. These vicious warriors are known for raiding and the Blackstone Legion has come to lay waste to them, every last one of them. Holden Cross leads the assault on Valkenheim with the support of the Warden. He alone must brave the ice covered rivers and lakes before hurling himself into the very heart and home of his enemies. As we get to see more of the Blackstone Legions methods we realize they’re not exactly the good guys. They’re here to slaughter, not for peace. A brutal series of executions follows but Apollyon’s goals are something else. She brings up Wolves and Sheep again noting her desire to see the Wolves prosper. A Viking with a greater propensity for war is released named Ragnar. Why does she leave a butcher alive? What is she planning?

The style of game isn’t my type of game but the writing for the characters so far has been really good. The commander expecting an army only to receive one lonely soldier is pretty hilarious but the way he rolled his head and mumbled was beautiful comedic timing. It’s also so interesting how they use body language to show emotion and give each person a different personality instead of facial expressions. It seems somebody put a lot of love and thought into the characters for this game.

Yeah I really enjoy the writing too, when I first got the game I was surprised by it and how much I enjoyed the comedy. One of my favorite jokes being when Stone and the other Conqueror face off with the same weapon dressed alike and he goes “One of us should go home and change.” For Honor I find is a fun blend of comedy and seriousness that contrast pretty well. And as you brought up they did put a lot of work into the animations especially since you rarely see much of character’s faces. I’m reminded a bit of other times we see limits in other things like how silent films had to use a lot of body language to convey what they intended since they lacked sound.

1.5 Sabotage

The path in Valkenheim is blocked and there is only one person ready for the job of clearing the way. Mercy. Mercy is a Peacekeeper and heads off to fulfill her task of slaying watches, guards, and sentries to ensure the Blackstone Legion can move appropriately and safely through Valkenheim. This is a sneaking mission, a bloody one. Mercy must make her way through a Viking fort, stalk through the shadows, execute, and kill, any Viking that stands in her way. Seeing their defenses she has just the idea of how to deal with them in a catastrophic way.

This is a fun looking game. It’s too bad the online community has dwindled, but I’ll probably grab it for myself anyway. Thanks for showing it off, Tolvo.

1.6 Wolves Among Sheep

[Animal Cruelty]
This is it, the final battle against the Vikings. We return to the Warden as they lead a battering ram to Svengard. Svengard is described by Apollyon as a place full of backstabbing miscreants who hoard food. But this isn’t the whole truth. It is in fact a gathering place for all of the grains of the Vikings and their goal is to kill them all and burn the supplies. Our Warden finally understands the horror that is the brutal way of Apollyon but not before fighting a legendary Viking Warlord, Gudmundr. The devastation they bring to Svengard is the final straw and the Warden turns their back on the Blackstone Legion. Even Holden Cross begins to have doubts along with Mercy and Stone. All had their reasons to fight but this was not what they had signed up for.

2.1 Raiding the Raiders

The Vikings are barely surviving. Just as Apollyon planned the Wolves among them rose up to power while they forced the Sheep to starve. Ragnar is such a Wolf, he is back and is now leading his own clan. His outpost is a hive of scum and villainy. Up in the reclusive mountains the Raider has lived a harsh life but now they are descending to take the fight to Ragnar and others. They plan to free them of their pilfered food and spread it among those in need. The Raider is a member of the Warborn clan, and ancient group that was well known for their might back in the day. They seek to see the Warborn clan grow in power once again and to reclaim their own lands from the rule of the evil Apollyon.

I forgive you for the lack of puppy in the last couple of episodes mostly since it dawned on me that it seems we have a lot of female leads or powerful women in this game. My husband was the one to point it out that it was unusual to have so many female playable characters within a game. It’s really exciting to see this and to see them be so powerful and confident. Also their character designs are so subtle that if you were to just look at some of them you wouldn’t be able to tell gender at all which is making this game way better then I thought it would be. Seeing more of this game, I wish it had a bigger community behind it for the online since this game seems to have so much going for it.

I remember being really excited for this game when it first got shown off. And now seeing it I do wish it had more community to make me want to get into it. I’ve always wanted a good “realistic” fighting game.

Yep this game has a lot of really powerful women in it, it’s something I really appreciate about it. I was thinking about doing a supplementary video on gender and diversity in For Honor. I wish there was more racial diversity though as most characters outside of the Samurai campaign are white. Though for multiplayer you can make anyone any skin color which is great.

Yeah it is such a darn shame more people don’t play. I’m hoping we’ll see a spike at Christmas and a push for it, since they’re now adding new content and fixing a lot of problems we might see more player retention.

It would be cool if they expanded outside of the three different warrior classes. If we saw maybe an African American tribe of some sort or something else outside of the Samurai, Viking, and Knights. It has a lot going for it and perhaps more updates will expand its popularity. I also think though you doing this Lp is very helpful for those not informed of this game.

I can certainly see why they went with Knight, Viking, and Samurai, but the world is filled with so many types of warriors. I’d love to see some of the other ones come in.

Definitely, if they ever make a sequel I really wanna see them add on more classes and groups. Like seeing Chinese warriors, maybe just in General North African and Middle Eastern forces based on groups like the Scythians, etc. Now I would worry they’d mishandle it, but hopefully if they do make a sequel and go that route they’d have consultants since it seems like they did actually work close with historians, enthusiasts, and for instance experts on samurai. While the game is still fantasy it has good tinges of actual history and combat in it.
