Wanted to call myself “mad surgeon” in a Soul Calibur 2 arcade cabinet, but the character limit only allowed for “mad surge” to fit in; later on, when the internet became a thing, I started using it there too, and found out it actually had a unique ring to it and it stuck
Disclaimer, I rarely get mad at things
You thrillhoused yourself!
There’s a bar in Calgary in a building that used to be a fire hall and the chief of said fire hall had a pet monkey. The monkey’s ghost is often blamed for any random unexplained goings on in the building which includes drinks going missing which led me to think “hey, Alcoholic Ghost Monkeys would be a great shitty band name” when I heard about it because it was the mid-2000s and I was a teenager. Years later when trying to think of a username for something I recalled the myth of the ghost of Jocko and tried registering the name Ghost Monkey but that was taken so I went with Phantom Primate instead.
I used to name my WoW characters after cartoon characters that I liked. My main ended up being the one named Zim, after Invader Zim. Everyone called me that, and when it was finally time to move on from the game, I made it my social username everywhere else just so my friends would know it was me… And then it just kind of stuck. It’s nice and short and I do still love Invader Zim, so it’s okay.
My “brand” username is Magmethius, which is a planet from Space Quest 4. I chose it because I love the way it sounds, and because nobody else is going to be using it anywhere, probably. And the song from that location in the game is pretty dang catchy.
When i first discovered youtube and wanted to make crappy anime videos I told my parents about my intention. My dad told me to just use his account since it was already made and he didnt really use it. The name Warmal is a combination of the first three letters from his first and last name. Once i started branching out to other sites i kept using it just so people would know its me if we met cross platforms and stuff.
To this day he bugs me about using it since it was originally his and is technically his name. But hey. He gave it to me and doesnt really care. I kind of like the idea of the name crossing a generation and i feel like its become a huge part of me over the decade. Also. People cant seem to pronounce it. Not sure how many times ive been called “walmart”
Hahaha, luckily the meaning of “surge” isn’t as unfortunate
Okay so this is a fairly new username, but here’s the story behind it: For a while now I’ve recently been big into a manga series called Astra Lost in Space, which Viz posts online for free. I’m particularly a huge fan of the character Yun-Hua Lu, since I see a lot of my struggles with self-esteem and body issues reflected in her. So when I made a Viz website account, I used the name “SpaceBabe” to reflect my fondness for the character.
Fast-forward to the end of 2016, and I’m considering swapping out the old username I use everywhere for a new one. I decide to try “SpaceBabe” only to realize everyone has taken it. Try different iterations of it, nothing. Until I realize no one had taken “CosmicLass” on twitter. I wasn’t sure if it’s what I wanted, but I settled for it. I now realize it was the right choice, as I far prefer it to “SpaceBabe”
My name is just wordplay stacks on wordplay to make a pretty okay sounding name. To start, I really like birds. Like, show me a cute bird and I will love you forever. More specifically I love owls, even more specifically Snowy Owls. They’re one of very few animals that I can give the scientific name for off the top of my head (another is Gorilla Gorilla), which is Bubo Scandiacus. At one point I was naming a Snowy Owl character, and wanted some clever wordplay in the name, so I worked from Bubo Scandiacus as a starting point. Barbara is a name I’ve always liked, but it doesn’t flow together well in the full name, and I prefer nicknames anyways, so it became Babs. Scriven is an… I want to say Old French, but I can’t recall with certainty. It’s Old {European } meaning basically a scholar, which fits the image that owls usually get (despite being just huge doofuses in reality). So that gave me Babs (Bubo) Scriven (Scandiacus), and I’ve stuck with it since.
I realised since the forum was in its infancy I could get my actual name as my username. I am notoriously flakey about keeping screen names so I just prefer using my first (and sometimes full) name.
I used to work with surgery reports fairly frequently, and many of the surgeons used speech to text software. Whenever ‘below knee amputation’ came up, the software would unfailingly record it as “bologna amputation,” which I found hilarious. Then I just spelled Bologna a bit more phonetically because it made me giggle.
My brother came up with the name, but I have since taken it for myself when registering for various forums around the webs. It has no specific meaning, I think the goal was mainly to have a unique, 5 letter name in the same way that Smosh was.
I’m a huge Pokemon fan, and I really liked Zygarde and decided to just take that as my general name for most of my online usernames, and as for the 22, It’s just that was how old I was when I chose the name and it just stuck.
I remember a while back a forum whose name I’ve long forgotten had in bold text on their front page “DO NOT USE GENERIC NAMES LIKE DESMOND, SIMON OR KENNY” or something across those lines. I thought it was funny so I’ve named myself DSK on many platforms. The “dev” part is the fact that I’ve attempted to create mods for various games (with little success)
