Victory by a Water Margin - Let's Play Suikoden

With the neighboring nation of Jowstone Jowsten causing some sort of vague trouble, Teo McDohl leaves to ensure the safety of the Scarlet Moon Empire. In his stead, his son will begin working for the empire as one of the country’s soldiers/errand boys. But before Teo leaves and Mir has to work for a gigantic asshole, the whole family gets together for a nice meal. And by family, I mean most of these people are related by loyalty and not blood. Gremio especially.

[details=New Characters]
Tir McDohl

Tir is the son of Teo McDohl, and a promising young soldier of the Scarlet Moon Empire. Although he doesn’t speak much, his guardians, (read: Gremio,) more than make up for him. Although he is loyal to his country and his father, he’s more protective of his friends than anyone else.
I had to rename him Mir. If I didn’t, he’d have to be named either tir McDohl or Tir TcDohl. Such is the heavy burden of playing a Konami game. For the sake of easily finding him in character descriptions, I’ll be referring to him as Tir in the informational sections of the thread. In game and in chapter titles and descriptions, I’ll be calling him Mir. Just FYI.
Recruitment: He’s the player character. You start with him.

Teo McDohl

Tir’s father and one of the five generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire. He is one of the strongest and most well known of the generals, mainly due to his involvement in the War of Succession. He is also one of the most trusted men of Emperor Barbarossa himself.

Emperor Barbarossa Rugner

The Emperor of the Scarlet Moon Empire, known as the Golden Emperor. Having resisted an usurping by his uncle, his rule is strong and his followers are loyal. And most of the people of the empire think he’s an alright dude. He is friendly and compassionate, but he makes some weird decisions at times. Like the one where he hired a magician who looked like his dead wife Claudia. Kinda strange, ya gotta admit.

Windy

The court magician of the Scarlet Moon Empire. Given her position and her closeness to Emperor Barbarossa, she’s probably incredibly powerful. Most people tend to focus on how similar she looks to Barbarossa’s deceased wife. That probably isn’t important, though.

Kasim Hazil

One of the Five Generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire. He’s one of the kingdom’s best swordsmen, but he’s quite friendly. He’s good friends with Teo McDohl.

Kraze Miles

A commander of the Scarlet Moon Empire. Even Teo is unable to find anything good to say about the man. He’s dismissive of those he sees as beneath him, and only desires to climb the ranks further. Why the emperor assigned Tir to be his subordinate, or why he even keeps him around, is unknown.[/details]

Did you know that you can obtain one of two runes by traversing a mountain you’re not supposed to know about yet, bypassing hordes of angry monsters that will tear apart either of your current characters, especially Ted? Well, now you do! And in the brief moment it took for Mir and Ted to go to Mir’s room to speak, they journeyed all the way to find that rune. Many monsters left the mountain far richer that day.

oooo! Excited, never played Suikoden so it’s going to be interesting to see why people love this game series so much.

It’s time for Mir’s first day on the job… after he takes a short trip around Gregminster. I’m sure Kraze will be fine with that, right? Well whatever the case, we’re going to be getting a good look at the world around us, both at home and on the mysterious Magician’s Island. Oh, and there’s Luc. He’s also there.

[details=New Characters]
Milich Oppenheimer

The fashionable Rose General of Scarlet Moon. Though his dress sense is a tad on the tacky side, Milich can be surprisingly polite when he’s not wrapped up in choosing an outfit.

Sonya Shulen

One of the five generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire. She heads the Emire’s navy, operating mainly around Lake Toran. Her current base is the fortress Shasarazade, located near the Tolna Canal. She and Teo McDohl seem to have a romantic relationship. And by “seem,” I mean it’s incredibly obvious.

Futch

An apprentice dragon knight. Despite the company’s reputation, few people respect Futch because of his tiny stature and his quick temper. Still though, he and his creatively-named elephant dragon Black have a deep connection, and his skills as a rider are certainly nothing to complain about.

Luc

A young mage and apprentice of the seer Leknaat. He’s quite mischievous, but he’s probably not dangerous. Probably.

Leknaat

Leknaat is a seer who provides astrological forecasts for the Scarlet Moon Empire. Although she is the sister of Windy, the court magician, she lives on the Magician’s Island with only her apprentice Luc in her company.

Kanaan

You know how Kraze is basically the worst? Imagine somebody so terrible that even Kraze doesn’t want anything to do with him. You’ve got Kanaan, a loudmouth with essentially no actual power in the empire, considering he’s Kraze’s assistant. He certainly acts like he’s important, though.[/details]

With Mir’s first job behind him, he must suffer through Kanaan being Kanaan as he presses on to Rockland. Gregminster wants their taxes collected, but with Rockland’s bandit troubles it falls on the ‘ol McDohl boys to do everyone’s job for them.

[details=New Characters]
Marco

Marco’s a kid that hangs around Rockland and plays the Cups Game with any given passerby. He’s got a pretty quick hand, but he doesn’t cheat. You can, though, because he repeats his pattern every time you leave. The universe can be cruel like that.

Varkas

A brigand known as the Whirlwind Axe, who makes his home on Mt. Seifu with his partner Sydonia. Although he’s fierce in battle, his demeanor is calm. According to Grady, he has been stealing Rockland’s taxes.

Sydonia

A strange brigand who tags along with Varkas. He doesn’t talk much, and calling him care-free would be an understatement. He does display prowess in battle, though, and he has the unusual ability to teleport.[/details]

Lest you think your LP is underappreciated I’m following it for sure. Suikoden is one of my favorite games and I’m still amazed by how no-nonsense it is compared to so many JRPGs out there. Compact run time makes for great replayable material.

Also, great job with pages for updates. :smile:

Mir’s first two jobs are done, so he and his family return home for dinner. But what of Ted, who was taken off by Kanaan to see Kraze? As the night goes on and Gremio’s meal nears completion, Mir can only wonder why they wanted to see Ted in the first place.

[details=New Characters]
Marie

Marie runs the inn in Gregminster. She’s close to the McDohl family and has few qualms in helping them on the fly. Of course, her inn is also frequently host to numerous Scarlet Moon soldiers, so perhaps it’s not the best place to hide out if you’re on the run from the law…

Viktor

A mysterious vagrant who showed up in Gregminster right in the nick of time. He’s quite the punk, but he knows a few tricks… of various levels of legality. He’s also the type of guy who knows a guy, and his “friends” may be of some import.
Recruitment: After Viktor helps the group escape from the inn, speak with him in the northwest section of town. He’ll tag along as everyone leaves.

Mir and his guardians leave for Lenankamp to meet with the friends of their new acquaintance Viktor. Who those friends are, and what Mir’s supposed to do while waiting for them, remains a mystery. But with Lenankamp in such close proximity to Gregminster, can Mir’s group evade the Imperial Army’s search?

[details=New Characters]
Krin

So just who is this guy? He’s in a house in Lenankamp, so I guess he lives there? And he gives you advice about jars? Okay???

Odessa Silverberg

The leader of the Liberation Army. Although the Imperials see her and her group as mere rebels, Odessa has managed to keep her small band together making precision strikes against the Empire. Her strong leadership and wisdom have won her respect from those who oppose the Empire.

Sanchez

One of the founding members of the Liberation Army, Sanchez used to serve the Empire before joining Odessa. He’s not exactly a fighter, so he helps coordinate the army’s operations.

Flik

Flik is a mercenary from the Warrior Village. He refers to himself as “Lightning Flik,” but he is more or less as good as he boasts. Flik fights fiercely for the Liberation Army alongside his lover, Odessa.

Humphrey Mintz

Is he a mercenary? A soldier? A fugitive? Humphrey isn’t exactly the talkative type, but he’s certainly an imposing figure. He’s also a founding member of the Liberation Army, so at the very least he has the trust of Odessa Silverberg.[/details]

Excellent LP, Suikoden is one of my favorite game series of all times and I’m glad someone is LPing it.

I’m actually quite surprised how well you translated something that would normally be a SSLP into video format, keep up the great work!

Mir has saved the bandits he accidentally sent to their deaths, and now he returns to the Liberation Army’s headquarters. Odessa has another, far less personal, errand for Mir to run. But helping her means equipping the rebellion against his own kingdom. And, let’s be honest, it also means going up the mountain with the murder rabbits on it again, and nobody wants to do that.

[details=New Characters]
Ledon

Ledon has an inn located right in the middle of Mt. Tigerwolf. He acts hospitable, (and is quite insistent in making sure you sit down and drink your tea,) but he doesn’t exactly have a trustworthy face.

Kessler

A bandit who works with Ledon. Much to, as it would seem, his disappointment. He opposes the Empire and has great admiration for Odessa, the only person who would make an actual stand against them.

Kage

Kage is a ninja with loyalty only to money. Thankfully, he’s on the Liberation Army’s paycheck, and if nothing else he won’t betray anybody until the job is done.[/details]

The Liberation HQ has been discovered by the Scarlet Moon Empire. With Flik, Humphrey and Sanchez unaccounted for, it would seem the imperial army has the upper hand in their intrusion.

[details=New Characters]
Ain Gide

A loyal general of the Scarlet Moon Empire. He has served Emperor Barbarossa for years, and was appointed to the Fortress of Kwaba after the Succession War. Despite his loyalty, he knows something of mercy.

Chandler

A merchant without a store. Keeps a pretty good stock of items, and is always looking for more to sell.

Antonio

Although he’s a skilled chef, Antonio can’t find work around the Scarlet Moon Empire. Currently staying in Seika.

Onil

The local gossip of Seika. She’s quite well informed, and information seems to reach her faster than any other.

Mathiu Silverberg

Mathiu is a doctor and a strategist, notable for being from the Silverberg family. During the Succession War, he worked on Barbarossa’s side, serving under General Kasim Hazil. But after an incident in Kalekka, he resigned from the army and stayed mostly in solitude. He stayed in Seika, tutoring the students of the village. Even when his sister, Odessa, started the Liberation Movement, he stayed away from war as he detested violence.

Camille is a debt collector, known as the She-Devil. After Mir and his company escaped Gregminster, Gremio’s bills were left unpaid. So uh…

I’ll let the poll run an extra hour or so, and if the three way tie remains I’ll roll a die. Sergei, however, will probably remain at the castle.

edit: On the die, Antonio’s 1 & 2, Maas is 3 & 4, and Sansuke is 5 & 6. The result is:

:I
Congratulations to Sansuke.

Thanks to Mir, the castle has been staffed. On Mathiu’s suggestion, however, he must turn his sights towards Lepant. According to Mathiu, he is a man whose strength and loyalty are equal. But unfortunately, it seems things will not be as easy as waltzing up to his house and asking politely. Getting to speak with Lepant will be difficult, and the methods to ensure a meeting dubious at best.

Rock is a man who really appreciates vaults. His only worldly desire is to build large vaults, then guard them. For whatever reason, he was hanging out in Lepant’s manor, and joined the Liberation Army the moment their lack of vault presented a new opportunity. Despite his appearance, he doesn’t join Mir in battles. After all, if he did, who would guard the vault?
Recruitment: Speak with him in Lepant’s Manor.

Juppo

A trickster, responsible for the various contraptions throughout Lepant’s mansion. He’s responsible for the awful hell wheel, so chances are he’s untrustworthy and hates puppies. He’s otherwise fine, but I still don’t trust him.

With Lepant on the Liberation Army’s side, it’s time again to find nearby people to recruit. Although the central-eastern end of the Scarlet Moon Empire is starting to run dry, there still remains a small handful of people who will join the ranks.
And two-thirds of them will be recruited via nepotism.

Recruitment: Win at least 5,000 bits from him in a game of Chinchirorin.

Sheena

On one fine morning, Mir walks out to the pier to find an elf passed out at the Liberation Army’s doorstep. The elf, Kirkis, came to warn them of an imminent attack on the elves by the Empire’s general, Kwanda Rosman. With to speak of in terms of numbers, the Liberation Army cannot immediately attack Kwanda’s fortress. Instead, Mir sets out on a reconnaissance mission to find out just what Kwanda’s secret plan is.

[details=New Characters]
Kirkis

An elf from the Village of the Elves. Unlike most of his brethren, he is compassionate towards other beings that aren’t elves, and wishes only for peace between all peoples. Upon learning of Kwanda Rosman’s plans to destroy the Great Forest, he rushed off to the Liberation HQ for help. Notably, he’s not a very good swimmer.
Recruitment: After the events in Kouan, he will be passed out in front of the docks the day afterwards. He will join automatically when he wakes up.

Viki

A strange woman who knows the ability to teleport. She has not mastered it, however, as her scatterbrained nature frequently leads her to teleporting suddenly and sometimes incorrectly. Still though, her abilities prove to be useful, as they can take Mir and his party to locations they’ve been to before, (provided she doesn’t mess up the spell, of course.)
Recruitment: She kinda just… blinks in out of nowhere in the middle of the Great Forest. She will teleport back to Toran Castle… hopefully.

Kuromimi

A vengeful widdle Kobold from the Great Forest. He’s the only Kobold who hasn’t been taken by the Empire, and he’s seeking a way to free his companions from Kwanda Rosman’s grasp. Not very fond of humans.

Valeria

Valeria grew up poor in a village in the Great Forest. But she trained diligently under the great fencer Roundier Haia, eventually becoming one of his best students. With her Star Sword and mastery of the Falcon Rune, she became the lieutenant of Kwanda Rosman. However, with Kwanda’s desire to destroy the Great Forest and its inhabitants, Valeria betrayed the Empire and tried to convince the elves to stop his plans. That, however, didn’t exactly work out well.
Recruitment: After escaping prison in the Village of the Elves, she will join the group automatically as you leave the town.

Time is limited, but the elves refuse to cooperate and strike the empire’s fortress. With no other option, Mir and his group must go to the Dwarves to find some way to stop the empire’s new weapon. But will the Dwarves be any more helpful than the elves? (The answer won’t surprise you.)

A dwarf with an unknown name but a very known occupation. The Chief of the Dwarves spites elves for their ego and underestimates humans, so if you wanted some ~fantasy racism~ then you’ve got it. He’s proud of dwarven creations, and touts about how great his vault is.[/details]

A record of the Battle of Pannu Yakuta Castle

The battle at Pannu Yakuta Castle was the first major battle recorded from the Liberation War. After General Kwanda Rosman burned down the Village of the Elves, the Liberation Army was swift to launch a counter attack. Their ranks included the remnants of the elves in the region, the traitorous lieutenant Valeria, and a small group of soldiers from the previous army. Their leader was Mir McDohl, though at the time the population assumed they were the then-deceased Odessa Silverburg.

The Empire’s soldiers numbered at precisely 9,000 men, which outnumbered the 7,015 soldiers under the command of the Liberation Army. But due to General Rosman’s straightforward strategy, as well as the Liberation Army’s excellent intel on their strategies, the Scarlet Moon Empire was easily defeated and all 9,000 men were wiped out. The Liberation Army, on the other hand, lost only 1,530 soldiers overall.
The Liberation Army then stormed Pannu Yakuta, with Mir taking the lead alongside a handful of soldiers. On the roof of the castle, General Rosman dueled Mir. Mir was the victor, but Kwanda Rosman joined the Liberation Army after the fight.
