Deep Dives Drive Detective to Descriptively-Detailed Discoveries - Let's Play D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die

“This is the story of a man with a very strange fate.”

D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die is the (as of now) latest game from Hidetaka Suehiro, aka Swery65. You’re probably most familiar with his previous works, Deadly Premonition and Spy Fiction. What’s that? Somehow you haven’t heard of either of these games?

No worries!

D4 stands on its own while delivering just the right amount of nods to Swery’s previous titles, so that newcomers and Swery vets alike have plenty to look forward to. (And if you’re worried that this game won’t be as weird as Deadly Premonition, then you also have nothing to worry about.) I’ll be trying to point out all of the references as they happen, but I’m bound to miss some since there are quite a few!

In D4, we follow the life of David Young, a former police detective with Boston’s Narc Squad who quit the force to investigate the death of his wife, “Little Peggy” Young. Unfortunately, the only thing David has to go on is Peggy’s last words: “Look for ‘D’.”

Together with Forrest “Teddy” (and also “Grizzly”, I guess) Kaysen and… uh, his… friend(?) Amanda, the three look for clues in the form of Mementos, which David uses to travel back in time to track down anyone who might know the identity of “D.” (Get it? D4 → 4D. (The 4th dimension is time. (nice)))

The game is a television show. Not in the beginning-of-Indigo-Prophecy way of it being a literal entertainment production, but from the episodic format right down to the campy buddy cop crime drama “opening” theme. This game oozes camp in (my opinion) the best way possible.

Now, as much as I enjoy the charm that this game has, there’s one major problem with it (that I won’t be telling my co-commentator about until it happens because it is a pretty big buzzkill), and if you already know even the slightest bit about this game, then you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

(major spoilers ahead)

[details=The Lowdown]
First, a little backstory: D4 was announced in September 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive, utilizing the Kinect to allow for the use of motion controls to direct pretty much the entirety of the game. Then the game was released… a week after it had first been announced. Even with a positive critical response, D4 reportedly had abysmal sales which threw its episodic release plan into immediate doubt.

And though D4 has since been ported to the PC, its ship was already sunk, so after only the prologue and the first two episodes were released, all further content was canceled.

So, that’s it. The story just kind of… ends with no conclusion.
[/details]

I’ll be showing my friend, Lobo, (who has absolutely no knowledge of this game and is only vaguely aware of Deadly Premonition) all of what D4 is. Since the game is pretty chatty, we’re going to end up talking over a lot of important elements, so this LP is just meant to be a laid-back stroll through what is the quintessential Swery experience. I’ll give quick summaries of documents we find in the game so as not to slow down the pace too much, but I’ll include links to the docs in their full length.

I’d rather if everyone could hold off on spoilers for this game, since there are some major elements that could, well, spoil it for others. However, feel free to speculate all you want, since Lobo and I are going to be doing plenty of that by the end of this game.

Frankly, even though he is technically a totally different dude I have a lot of trouble trusting anyone named Forest Kaysen. I’m gonna be keeping an eye on him.

I strongly recommend watching this extended show/interview that toco toco did with Swery where he takes them on a little tour of Osaka. I think it’s pretty neat and gives a lot of insight into what makes his games what they are.

Let’s explore the apartment a little bit more and wonder what the hell is wrong with Teddy. We also get introduced to someone who might know about Peggy’s killer.

Oh, boy, this is such a bizarrely aesthetically pleasing game already? I’m digging the main character and the weird ass everything. Can’t wait to actually dive into this plot…

Also, super satisfied that you highlight all the D’s inside your episode banners. It’s a neat little detail. (Okay, I’m done, I promise.)

Me too, dude. (I lied.)

The clam chowder cutscene was the first thing I ever saw from this game, and that was a pretty good indication that it was gonna be pretty great. I have to agree, though, that it’s probably the most tame when it comes to Teddy’s methods of eating. Probably the heaviest meal David (almost) eats in the game as well.

It’s arguable that the first meal is the one where Teddy eats the most, as the next one is also pretty ridiculous, but there’s one later in the game that I am definitely looking forward to showing, because it gets a little… frightening.

I have no iDea what kinD of accent DaviD is using, and I love it. It’s supposeD to be a Boston accent, but it Doesn’t sounD all that much like one. MinD you, I’m not American, so maybe I Don’t understanD these things.

According to IMDb, Ben Pronsky (Dave’s VA) is from Texas. Huh.

As an American, I can say that Boston accents are hilarious, but I can’t however speak to David’s accent’s authenticity. The main feature of the Bostonian accent is their seeming inability to pronounce soft "R"s, like car, hard, short for example.

According

Uh oh, you missed one.

I missed an “and” too. i kan rite gud

:hamburger::hamburger::hamburger: Update! :hamburger::hamburger::hamburger:

I hope you’re ready for a barrage of character introductions, because we’ve got just that!

This LP is now officially AVANT GAAAAARDE!!!

This episode’s documents:

I’m 80% sure that Phillip is just Rufus Shinra from FF7. Just as a flight attendant now.

Part of me really hoped that David was both the person who saved the Stanley Cup but also the person who stole it as well. But I guess we’ll never get those time traveling shenanigans.

:sweat_drops: :sweat_drops: :sweat_drops: Update! :sweat_drops: :sweat_drops: :sweat_drops:

We’re gonna slow it down a little by doing some extra cases, but things take an upswing towards the bizarre pretty abruptly.

Part of me really hoped that David was both the person who saved the Stanley Cup but also the person who stole it as well.

That’s sort of the thing about this story. David could have been up to three people in that story: the thief, the hero, and the off-duty detective. I would have welcomed whatever contrivance necessary to make David have to go back in time to steal the Stanley Cup.

Okay, I thought I could handle this game’s weirdness, having played Killer7 before. The scantily-clad cat woman, and the overeating, and the fabulous fashion fabricator with his mysterious matching mannequin were all okay! But this is a bit much, and I assume it gets much weirder.

Episode 6 is the one I’ve been waiting to show off. It’s where the game goes “fuck it,” and gives us the best stunt scene in the game. Definitely excited for that one.

:meat_on_bone::meat_on_bone::meat_on_bone: Update! :meat_on_bone::meat_on_bone::meat_on_bone:

We’ll finish up the plane conversations for now and head back to the apartment for… you know, the “usual”.

And now that steak-eating preferences are back in the zeitgeist, it’s time to finally settle this once and for all:

What’s the best way to eat a steak?

 • Well-done with ketchup
 • Medium-rare
 • All at once

This episode’s documents:

Wait, you can just leave? I thought you were stuck in the dive until you’d dealt with whatever you were there to do. But being able to go back to your apartment to eat steak and talk to your detective friend and buy a shirt from your cat seems incongruous.

This is just speculation, but David’s looking for D, right? Now, which letter does his name begin with again?

Also, I just found your Tomb Raider LP. It needs more love, it’s pretty good.

Man, this was a well-timed episode. Unlike steak, which should not be well-timed at all. Medium-rare or rare are clearly the best ways to go. Unless you’re Teddy, in which case food is nothing before you.
